Yoga Block & Yoga Brick - A tool for everyone

A yoga block or yoga brick is a tool for yoga beginners to support you in various asanas. Especially in yoga styles where the correct alignment in the asanas plays an important role, yoga blocks are often used. With the three different heights, the yoga brick is also very useful in all other yoga styles. Mostly, it is used to extend the arms in different positions. For example, in postures such as Trikonasana or Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasna), if you can’t reach the ground with your hands, you can easily use the yoga block or yoga brick to make it possible.

With the yoga brick under your hands, the position is immediately easier to attain and your lower back is protected.
But even for advanced yogis it can be helpful to use a yoga block or yoga brick now and then. For example, yoga blocks help you perfect your alignment in the asanas. To get a better feeling for the internal rotation of the upper arms, the yoga block can be placed in positions such as the Forearm Balance (Pincha Mayurasana) or the Low Plank (Chaturanga Dandasana), for example, between the hands or elbows. To train the internal rotation of the thighs in the Mountain Pose (Tadasana) or the Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana), you can squeeze the yoga block between your thighs. Using a yoga brick, you can explore familiar asanas from a new angle. With the support of yoga bricks or yoga blocks, you can also make asanas, such as as the Forward Bend, a regenerative posture by resting your head on one or more yoga blocks or yoga bricks. Even in the Easy Pose (Sukhasana), yoga blocks can serve as a support, resting your forehead on one or more blocks. And if there is no yoga cushion at hand, you can use the yoga brick or yoga block instead of a cushion for your meditation.

Yoga Block: Which material is the right one?

In the Bodynova shop you can find yoga blocks made of two different materials: EVA foam or cork. An EVA foam yoga block or yoga brick is very light, and perfect for those who like to take their own to the studio. It comes in many different colors so you can tailor it to your yoga outfit or yoga accessories. It also comes in two different sizes, so you're guaranteed to find the right yoga block or yoga brick for your yoga practice.
If you prefer natural materials, the cork yoga block or yoga brick may be right for you. It is made of 100% natural cork, and not only looks very beautiful, but also offers through the slightly rough and absorbent surface even more support. Cork yoga bricks and blocks are particularly stable and provide safe support during yoga practice. But they are a little heavier than the EVA foam yoga blocks. Our yoga bricks of cork are also available in two different sizes, and we also have the yoga cork blocks.

Standard or XL: Which yoga block size should I choose?

Our yoga bricks are available in two different sizes: Both the EVA foam yoga bricks and the cork yoga bricks are available in a standard version and in a slightly larger XL or XXL version. Basically, sizes are a safe and helpful support for your yoga practice. However, if you are new to yoga or need the yoga bricks for your yoga studio, it may be better to choose the larger version. This way you can be sure that all yoga poses can be performed safely and correctly.

Each side has a different height making it possible to find the required height for each asana. For example, if you want to use the yoga brick or yoga block as a cushion as a seat pad for your meditation, the flat side is usually the most comfortable. If you need support in a standing posture like Trikonasana, the maximum height or the middle height may be better. It all depends on what you plan to do with the yoga block and what your personal yoga practice looks like.

One yoga block or two?

When buying yoga props, the question always arises: Do I need one yoga block or two? If you are just starting yoga, one yoga brick or yoga block will probably be enough for now. With one yoga brick you can perform most asanas. In Trikonasana you can place the block under your hands or squeeze it between your thighs in Tadasana. For a passive back bend you can place the yoga brick under the sacrum in the shoulder bridge and you can sit on it in the closing meditation.

As your yoga practice progresses, however, you will notice that there are asanas that require two yoga bricks or blocks, such as in the Pyramid Pose (Parsvottanasana), or when you carefully approach the Monkey Pose (Hanumanasana). As always, it depends on what you plan to do with the yoga blocks. Our cork blocks are even cheaper in the set of 2 than when you buy them individually.

More yoga blocks from Bodhi

In addition to our classic yoga blocks made of EVA foam and cork, you can find three more yoga blocks online in the Bodynova Yoga Shop. These are shoulder stand blocks. These relieve pressure on the cervical spine in positions where there would otherwise be a lot of pressure on the neck, such as in the Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana) or the Plow (Halasana). The shoulder stand block is a bit flatter, but much larger than an ordinary yoga block. It is placed under the shoulders, with the long edge roughly flush with the shoulders. In this way, the back of the head can sink to the ground, while the neck floats freely and the cervical spine is relieved. Especially for people with a sensitive neck, the shoulder stand block makes the Shoulder Stand and the Plow much more comfortable.
